Tailbone pain
Tailbone pain (Coccygodynie)
Tailbone pain or coccygodynia is a painful condition of the tailbone or coccyx.
Both men and women can suffer from tailbone pain.
Symptoms and complaints for tailbone pain
Most patients experience pain at the tailbone while sitting and when getting up from the sitting position. Sometimes the pain is such that a certain sitting position (leaning back like in the car or on the couch) is completely impossible.
Causes/treatment of tailbone pain
Tailbone pain is usually caused by a fall on the tailbone. Childbirth or prolonged incorrect sitting posture can also cause tailbone pain. Certain sports such as cycling, rowing or motor sports can cause pain due to repeated pressure on the tailbone. However, tailbone pain can also occur without trauma.
Being overweight increases the risk of developing tailbone pain.
Sudden significant weight loss can also trigger tailbone pain as the subcutaneous fat layer disappears.
Myofascial trigger points of the M. Gluteus Maximus and the M. Piriformis can give referred pain to the tailbone. Vertaalde tekst In addition to treating the trigger points, stretching the muscle is part of the treatment.
An overactive pelvic floor can be both the cause and the result of tailbone pain.
In pain, the pelvic floor is often tightened.
In addition, antalgic movement patterns often cause low back pain.
Therefore, the goal of treatment should be to bring all these structures (muscles/joints) back into balance.
